The US reality TV star Kim Kardashian is latest and most unlikely celebrity to be involved in allegations regarding looted antiquities. A fragment of Myron’s Samian Athena (right), a piece of Roman sculpture purchased by Kardashian from a Belgian art dealer, was seized by authorities in the US in 2016. This was due to US customs officials being unsatisfied with documentation supplied by the broker relating to the origins of the work.

A request for information placed by the US authorities from Italian archaeologists produced the following claim:

Based on the information and scientific aspects the archaeologist provided, the archaeologist opined that the defendant statue was looted, smuggled and illegally exported from Italy.

The authorities in Italy have since placed a request to have the work repatriated to the country.

A spokesperson for Kim Kardashian has since claimed that she never purchased the piece and had no clue about its existence.
