An important painting by the celebrated aboriginal artist William Barak has been acquired by the state of Victoria in Australia from an auction in New York. The state contributed AU$500,000, to add to a fundraising campaign to buy the 1897 painting, 'Corroboree (Women in possum skin cloaks)', at Sotheby's. A wooden parrying shield was also acquired.
